In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as women – there are no statistics on how many of these are women of colour. Project 2036 host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon workshop, designed to improve online coverage of women of colour in the arts.
The lack of inclusive participation has led to an alarming gap of content – and inherent bias – in the world’s most popular research tool. This edit-a-thon aims to begin addressing that imbalance – the workshop will include tutorials for beginners and editing support, alongside discussion and refreshments.
Art+Feminism run edit-a-thons and other initiatives to make an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements to gender, feminism and art-related subjects on Wikipedia.
