An evening with Sir Lenny Henry

Raising funds for the Bush Theatre
Book tickets
25 Jan

For one night only, national treasure Sir Lenny Henry hosts a special event to raise funds for the Bush Theatre, performing extracts from his smash-hit play, August in England.

Returning to the Bush, Lenny Henry will reprise his role as “August” – the charismatic Brummie greengrocer with the gift of the gab, whose world is turned upside down in the wake of the Windrush scandal.

Bringing his unique blend of wit, warmth, and storytelling, Lenny will perform selected extracts from his critically acclaimed one-man show, followed by a live Q&A about his trailblazing career chaired by culture writer and podcaster, Nancy Durrant.

Join us for an intimate and unforgettable evening of theatre magic with a true legend, and help support the future of new writing.

Why are we raising funds?
Despite sold-out performances, two recent West End transfers, and a passionate community of supporters, the Bush Theatre finds itself on a financial precipice. As a charity, the Bush faces rising costs and a real-terms reduction in government funding. To safeguard our vital artist development programmes, we need to raise an additional £100,000 by April 2025.

Safeguarding Artist Development
At the Bush, we are dedicated to providing pathways for talent development for British and Irish writers, with a particular focus on Black and Brown voices. However, many of these vital programmes that nurture new artists are now under threat.

This includes our annual Open Submissions call-out for scripts, which provides an opportunity for over 1,000 writers without agents or connections to have their work read. This programme has been key to discovering fresh talent, but due to funding shortages and consistently rising costs, it is now at risk of closure. The loss of this crucial initiative would sever a vital link in the development of the theatrical canon.

By attending this exclusive event, you can play a vital role in this work. Artists have been at the heart of this small and mighty orgnisation for over 50 years, launching the careers of luminaries like Richard Gadd, Benedict Lombe, James Graham, Waleed Akhtar, Tyrell Williams, Arinzé Kene and Victoria Wood. With your support, we can continue to evolve the canon, and ensure the future of British theatre reflects the city, and world, we live in.

Lenny Henry
Lenny Henry has risen from being a cult star on children’s television to becoming one of Britain’s best-known comedians, as well as a writer, philanthropist and award-winning actor. Lenny Henry's first play, August in England, premiered at the Bush Theatre in 2023 co-directed by Lynette Linton and Daniel Bailey. In recent years Lenny has starred in The Comedy of Errors at The National, Fences at the Duchess Theatre, The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui at The Donmar and most recently August Wilson’s King Hedley II at Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2019. Lenny’s television credits include Broadchurch, The Syndicate, The Long Song and his biographic Danny and The Human Zoo.  Lenny’s Production Company, Douglas Road, has achieved success in partnership with Burning Bright on the recently acclaimed The Commonwealth Kid documentary and has a host of other programmes in the pipeline. As a co-founder of Comic Relief Lenny was delighted to announce this year that the British public has donated over £1billion to Comic Relief over the last 30 years. Lenny is a strong advocate for diversity, taking his work on the subject to Cannes in order to deliver the Keynote speech launching the idea of offering tax breaks for diversity, as well as talks given in Rome to the global TV and film insider audience. Lenny was chosen by Baroness Doreen Lawrence to interview three beneficiaries of the Stephen Lawrence trust at his memorial in 2018. Lenny recently released his memoir ‘Who Am I Again?’ in October 2019. He has been a Trustee of the National Theatre since February 2016.

Charles Holloway OBE: From West London to the West End

Benedict Lombe’s play Shifters transferring from the Bush Theatre to the West End was a milestone moment: for the artists involved, the audiences they engaged, and the future of British theatre it will inspire. It offers a glimpse of what commercial theatre in this country could be. And as Bush audience members and supporters know,…

Shifting the Narrative: Radical Love Commissions

A new initiative, inviting eight Global Majority artists to write short-form responses to the West End production of Benedict Lombe’s hit play Shifters, which is at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, until 12 October.  We’re delighted to be launching this new opportunity, alongside ATG Entertainment West End Creative Learning and the Producers of Shifters.…
