It is tech week at the Bush and all systems are go go go! We’ve had a very smooth and successful get-in and it’s been really exciting to see all members of the team and cast come in and gasp at James Button’s brilliant design. There is so much detail in the space. It’s much bigger than we anticipated but it is also a much more fun space for the actors to play in.
We’re doing three session days from 10am-10pm (which means no social life for us) but this is absolutely necessary for such a tech heavy show. There is lighting, sound, music, radio mics, video footage, cue lights, costume changes, set dressing and loads more elements to accommodate but it feels like we are finding a nice rhythm to get things done, making sure that all the nuts and bolts work together to get this beast in good form.
As assistant director you sometimes feel a bit abandoned during the technical rehearsals but Ria is keeping me on my toes with lots of tasks and problems to solve. This is a great opportunity to learn more about space and staging as well as observing the ways in which a director can keep morale high amongst the creative team and cast during such long days in a dark theatre (especially when the sunshine has come out to play).
